What Is Rhodium and Why It’s Used in Gold and Silver Jewelry

Rhodium is a rare and precious metal from the platinum family — even more expensive than gold. In jewelry, rhodium is used as a protective and decorative coating, applied by a galvanic (electroplating) method.

Pure white gold doesn’t actually exist in nature. Gold is naturally yellow, and what we call “white gold” is an alloy of gold with other metals such as nickel, silver, or palladium. These alloys give it a lighter tone, but not a true white color. That’s why most white gold jewelry is coated with rhodium, which gives it a bright, mirror-like platinum shine and extra protection against scratches and fading.

Rhodium plating is also commonly used on sterling silver 925 jewelry. It prevents silver from darkening or tarnishing, keeping its fresh look for years.

At Ukrainian Jewelry, we offer a wide selection of solid 585 gold and sterling silver 925 jewelry, including pieces finished with premium rhodium plating. Made by over 160 Ukrainian manufacturers and crafted both in Ukraine and Miami, our Ukrainian gold and silver jewelry in the USA combines beauty, durability, and authenticity.
